Living in the moment

It's been a while my fellow readers but I've decided to get back into blogging. I feel like one of those kids who got into trouble at school for forgetting to do their homework but what can I say life happens. Shit happens and things never really go as planned. Despite of that one could waste a whole lot of precious time over analyzing the past. It's time to live in the moment, (quoting one of Jason Mraz's song btw) focus on my future and keep being that person that pushes doors that say pull.

To be honest, starting a blog about fashion always intimidated me because I worried about what those who know me personally would think. Would I be considered vain, shallow, or an egocentric person? Just because I admire clothes and enjoy expressing myself through them? Does it make me less of an intelligent individual? All assumptions which people love to make but that I no longer care about. You will always be judged regardless of your actions so why not start doing what makes you happy and stop worrying.  Be you.

Anyways, enough of my motivational talks because I really could go on and on. These pictures were taken in Wynwood. Absolutely loved these flamingo print shorts the minute I saw them. Love the fact that it's February and I'm wearing this. Oh Miami, how I love thee.

Miami Design District

Going to make this one a quick one since I have to get ready for a job interview! This look was also for my styling final. I took these in the Miami Design District and can I say that the design district has turned into such a beautiful area. A lot of the high end stores are moving to this area and the restaurants and cafes around are adorable. Since I had to do 5 looks for my class and everything was closed I had to change in a car. Boy was that a struggle. I actually ended up ripping one of the dresses trying to wear it in the car.

I bought this shirt more than a year ago at a thrift store and that was the first time I wore it. The bag is one of my favorite thrift store finds I screamed of joy when I found it.

Brown eyed girl

I'm finally done with this quarter! What a stressful one it has been. I really enjoy listening to oldies actually I would say half of my music is oldies. Anything from the 60s,70s and 80s is good but then again my taste in music is really random. I had to come up with 5 outfits for my Styling final. The theme that I went for all five of my looks is prints so expect to see a lot of prints in my upcoming posts!

This crop top was actually a dress that I found in a thrift store. My wonderful mom separated the top from the dress so now it's a cute little cropped top.

Flower Power

Can I just say I'm really proud of myself for making my first GIF. I'm giving myself a cookie later. I took these the other day while I got a smoothie with a couple of friends from school at Smoothie King which I go to about 4 times week am not kidding by the way. Smoothie King should really give me an award for being their number 1 customer. I would like to thank my friend Alejandro for photo bombing me also and since the Spice Girls performance at the Olympics brought some good memories we felt the need to go back to third grade and take pictures with our best peace signs pose. Perfect for a Smoothie Ad campaign I tell you ha!

Make over time

So for my styling class this week I had to do a make over on someone. I did it on my mom's co worker Sheyla. I'm used to dressing myself so it was fun being able to dress somebody else. I thought pastel colors would suit her well.

Keep it simple

I'm not the world's greatest blogger but when I do it's so great because it's a distraction from reality and a way to connect with so many others who share my passion. Life is a roller coaster ride of ups and downs. The passing of my grandma and aunt both a month apart from each other definitely reminded me that life is short and you never know when it's going to be taken away from you. That is why you should live it to the fullest and not worry about the silly fights, and irrelevant things that we tend to worry about. Don't take it to seriously, enjoy it, and as cheesy as it may sound follow your dreams. My aunt was always so excited for me when she saw me pursuing my dreams and she always encouraged me. In memory of her I'm going to continue to blog because life is sweet and there is so many things to be grateful for.

Anyways, I'm back in school and have a lot of really fun classes this quarter. I'm taking Visual Merchandising 3 where I'm working on my portfolio and creating window displays. Fashion Magazines where I'm coming up with my own magazine concept. Styling I which is very easy but so much fun and last but not least Fashion Show Production which is teaching me all the details on how to produce a fashion show.

For my styling class, we were assigned to create an outfit that was from a thrift store. I was pretty excited about finding this outfit!

Borderline

Top: Gap
Blazer: Thrifted
Shoes: Candie's (Kohls)

I watched Madonna's documentary Truth or Dare last night which I found pretty interesting. Anyways, am sure we all have a couple pieces of clothing that we just never seem to take off. Lately for me it's hat and blazers. It's gotten to the point where my friends ask me if I am going to go to the beach in a blazer. This is what I wore to school today and yes I wore a blazer. But in my defense I hadn't worn one in a while! Also, I am going to start blogging in Spanish per my dad's request. He always nags me on how I'm loosing my Spanish and how I should practice and read the Spanish newspaper and he's probably right since I now speak "Spanglish". I'm sure there will be mistakes which will make my high school Spanish teacher cringe but hey practice makes perfect.

PS. Thank God for spellcheckers

It's been a while

If I could win an award it could probably be for being the worst blogger ever. Ha but am back and I finally got myself a beginner's DSLR camera that I'm still figuring out. Hopefully that will inspire me to take more pictures. My friend Alejandro also got a blog which you should check out. I love his style because he always takes risks.

On Sunday, Alejandro and I went and took pictures in a closed street near our building. We then headed to a friend's birthday party which was really fun. I wore socks in the first couple of pictures but I took them off because my shoe kept slipping off. The sunglasses I'm wearing were done by Alejandro. They are actually old CDs he cut and glued into the sunglasses.

Picture Fail

Lots of projects and tests barely leave me time to blog but I'm making an effort to keep going no matter how tired I am.The other day I went to the park to take pictures really quick since I always see beautiful pictures that are taken at parks. My luck wasn't that great since the pictures didn't turn out that nice. Not only was the sun setting down already the wind kept putting my hair all over my face and it kept moving my clothes. So after fighting with mother nature I got these shots which aren't so great plus I'm adding some of the bad ones just for laughs.

A.D.D Wednesdays

Hello my name is Gaby and I'm a crier. Today, during my Public Relations class we got a little off topic and began talking about movies that make you cry. Some of the ones that were mentioned were The Notebook, Click, Marley & Me, Love & Other Drugs, and Ps I love you. It looks like my Halloween weekend will be one filled of rain so I most likely will be watching movies. So what are some movies that make you girls cry?

I have a strong infatuation with maxi dresses. They look so feminine and are so comfortable plus they look splendid on any body type.Lately I've had a new appreciation for garments with longer lengths. I had to play a lot with the lightning of these pictures since the sun was going down and I somehow managed to wear almost everything Forever 21. Usually I don't like doing that but I didn't even notice. Opps!

Lalala

I'm enjoying the last few days I have of just school before I officially start working. There's quite a few outfits that I haven't posted so let me get to it! Wore this a couple of days ago for school. It was the day Isabel & Ruben Toledo came to talk. I don't own too many jumpsuits I feel like most look odd on me and it's kind of a pain whenever I have to go to the bathroom but I fell in love with this one. The Miami humidity got the best of my hair that day. The blazer is one of those lucky thrifted finds. Can't understand why someone would give it away but hey it's mine now! Thank you kind stranger

Isabel & Ruben Toledo Spring-Summer 2012

This Tuesday Isabel & Ruben Toledo came to talk to my school. For those of you who have not heard about this astonishing couple you must read and know about them. Isabel made Michelle Obama's inauguration dress and one of the reasons why she is not extremely well known is because they have never wanted to go corporate. Isabel & Ruben both came from Cuba when they were kids and met each other in Spanish class when they were 13. She  attended the  Fashion Institute of Technology and Parsons School of Design where she took courses in painting & ceramics and was also an intern for Diane Vreeland at the MET for 5 years. Her babysitter taught her how to sew when she was 8. Ruben is an illustrator, painter, and sculptor. He has painted mural and illustrations for Louis Vuitton, Barneys, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, and his witty illustrations have appeared in all of the top fashion magazines and journals such as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, The New York Times, Paper, and many more.

They have been in the fashion industry for more than 25 years and are often described as the 2 for 1 couple. She is often known as the designer's designer. Hearing them talk was really inspiring they have come a long way and everything has occurred so organically that it's interesting to hear.Isabel does not sketch, "I think of it as fashion from the inside out," she has said. "I can describe an idea or even a feeling to Ruben, and he’ll sketch it." Isabel advised us to never throw away our work no matter how horrible we think it is because that is our personal foot print and DNA.They encourage students to follow what they love and to think outside the box and to not look into the past but to the future. "Learn the rules, so you can later break them" she said when talking about fashion. Their apartment is an artist's paradise which you can see here.

On Wednesday ,The FGI Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded to Isabel And Ruben Toledo presented by Vanidades followed by an amazing Fashion Show by Isabel Toledo. I got to work as a dresser for the show and it was a really fun experience. The collection showed feminine, flowing dresses in colors taken from the tropical scenery of her inspiration, the Caribbean, including the blue hues of ocean and sky. After the show was over and the press was gone I got to talk to them for a couple of minutes and they are so genuine and humble which made me love them even more. I've watched many of their interviews since then and Ruben said in one of them  that "Sincerity is always sucessful". That has really struck with me these past couple of days.

Here are some pictures that Alejandro & I took while we had the chance. Although some models were a little rude I would have to say that our models were extremely nice.

Note: I've been trying to change the font in the black paragraph to the purple so that it matches but I messed with the HTML codes and I keep getting an error. If anyone knows how to fix this please help!
